"SUCCESS IS LIKING YOURSELF, LIKING WHAT YOU DO, AND LIKING HOW YOU DO IT." Maya Angelou
My Journey
I was born in Dominica, the Nature Island of the Caribbean. As far back as I can remember, I have been intrigued by nature's resilience, fascinated by the body's natural ability to heal itself, and purplexed by the risks one is willing to take to cover up perceived imperfections.
I have been involved in health care for my entire adult life. Straight out of high school I became a Dental Nurse working on preserving the dental health of school aged children. Ten years later I went on to be a registered nurse and later a nurse practitioner.
I've worked within the hospital, home health and physicians' practices helping patients manage blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and heart disease. After seeing hundreds of patients, I realized that most patients were more concerned with their physical appearance than their medical diagnoses. They were willing to spend time and money in looking well but not on being well. As time went by it became clearer that the best way to preserve health was through advocating the importance of self care.
In 2001 I was diagnosed with prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity. I was probably as sick as my patients. Like so many of them, my first impulse was to cover-up; look for clothes that did not espose my excess fat. I experienced first hand the damage to self-image that comes with excess weight. Luckily my health care provider practiced Functional Medicine. He recommended that I get off the night shift. Reluctantly I did and life has never been the same. I lost the excess weight, and I have learned to "let food be my medicine, and medicine be my food." (Hippocrates). However, I know that the journey continues. Solutions for healthy weight maintenance lies within each person and is not necessarily based on how much we eat or how hard we work out.
In 2016 I was led to open a Medical Weight Loss and Aesthetic Practice. At Corrective Ifestyles we embrace a holistic approach to weight management that includes listening, empathy, nutrition and self-care. Our focus is on building resistance to chronic health conditions by providing ongoing engagement, support, empowerment and encouragement.
During the Covid-19 Pandemic we were forced to close and have since moved our weight management services online. This gives us the ability to reach individuals who are struggling to find solutions to their metabolic health issues wherever they live.
